however, i grew tired of it all, as expected. the dvd's either collect dust in a cabinet somewhere, or simply won't play anymore because of overuse; the games got boring; the books are left to rot (tolkien's writing style isn't exactly an easy read, in my opinion); and i gave up the idea that i'm an elf in my previous life, too. i'm crossing my fingers on narnia and brothers grimm, but i feel they're not in the same league as lotr. harry potter doesn't fill the void either, as i'm not as much a fan of potter as i am of lotr. so where do we go from here, fantasy-wise? well, while aimlessly wandering around powerbooks, i bumped into a copy of silmarilion. now wouldn't that be a good prequel to the trilogy? we get to know about the history of middle-earth, about the characters whose names we can't even hope to pronounce, about the alliance of elves and men, and about...well, practically everything. now we don't have to read the books or watch the movies and say, "what the, who on (middle) earth is luthien?". mr. jackson should give it a thought. regardless of how king kong fares, i think a movie adaption of silmarillion is a win-win case. i don't know. it's free to dream, right? |
| karenkristie February 18, 2006 06:22 AM PST cool. would never guess you like tolkien. :) fancy meeting rob here in your comments page. such a small world wide web! :p | ||
| rob September 15, 2005 08:01 AM PDT The Silmarillion is my favorite of all Tolkien works even if it is more of a history book than a novel! Hehe.. Yes, Jackson should do Silmarillion aling with The Hobbit. Even if he just focus on Beren and Luthien's story, it'll be worth it. :) | ||
| jeff aka pimpstar September 5, 2005 03:10 AM PDT dana: it took me forever to read the books too. while the story is certainly entertaining in the big screen, the book tends to be head-numbing at times, especially to the casual reader. imagine reading a book full of "i am aragorn, son of arathorn, king of gondor, descendant of isildur, son of elendil, the elfstone, dunadan, the owner of the narsil, and the future husband of arwen evenstar. oh, you can also call me strider by the way!". thank goodness nobody talks like that anymore... | ||
| Dana August 29, 2005 07:21 AM PDT I loved LOTR! I bought all DVDs as soon as they came out. Hehehe! I never did read any of the books... *Tamad* LOL. TC & GB! | ||
| jeff August 15, 2005 01:32 AM PDT it would be great if peter jackson can come up with another trilogy (this time with Silmarillion), which i think would be enough to cover all noteworthy characters and events in the book. it's wishful thinking on my part though, and i know it'll never happen. if not, they can just squeeze the history of gandalf, isildur and elrond into a 2 or 3 hour movie. it's possible, but highly unlikely. oh well... | ||
| rocketboy August 12, 2005 09:25 PM PDT ..uuh i meant 'descent' | ||
| rocketboy August 12, 2005 09:24 PM PDT A great book. Tolkien's a genius. You have to admit, though. This is a tough book to adapt on screen. The number of characters and the encompassment of the history would be tough to squeeze into a 4 even a 6 hour movie. The best they can do is concentrate on a central character, perhaps the young Sauron's ascent to evil. | ||
